C-17 Endmontage

Am 29. November 2015 startete die 279. und letzte gebaute C-17A Globemaster III von der Piste in Long Beach, Kalifornien. Rund 25 Jahre hatte McDonnell Douglas (später Boeing) den Transporter hier gefertigt. Die erste Maschine absolvierte ihren Jungfernflug in Long Beach am 15. September 1991. Bei einem Besuch im Jahr 1992 befand sich die Produktion schon auf vollen Touren. Der Prozess blieb bis zum Ende gleich: Zu Beginn der Endmontage brachte ein großer Portalkran unter der Decke der Halle zunächst den Mittelrumpf in Position, dann folgte der vordere Rumpf samt Cockpitsektion. Anschließend kam die Tragfläche an die Reihe, dann das Heck. Pro Jahr entstanden so in der Hochzeit bis zu 16 Exemplare.

On 29 November 2015, the 279th and last C-17A Globemaster III built took off from the runway in Long Beach, California. McDonnell Douglas (later Boeing) had manufactured the transport here for around 25 years. The first aircraft made its maiden flight in Long Beach on 15 September 1991, and by the time of a visit in 1992, production was already in full swing. The process remained the same until the end: at the beginning of final assembly, a large gantry crane under the ceiling of the hangar first brought the centre fuselage into position, followed by the front fuselage including the cockpit section. Then came the wing, followed by the tail. Up to 16 units were built each year at the peak of production.
